While in the field carry a cloth measuring tape with you to estimate a
harvested white-tailed deer's weight. By measuring the circumference of the
deer's chest ( this is the girth behind the front legs )
You can closely determine its ''live weight.''
A 28-inch girth is equivalent to approximately 85 pounds.
A 32-inch girth is approximately 110 pounds.
A 36-inch girth is around 145 pounds.
And when you get to 40 inches get some help to drag him out. He's a brute in
the 180 pound class.
This method of ''taping a weight'' is use in the livestock industry.
You can also use it to measure a buck's antlers.
